I promised myself that the moment I was allowed out from lockdown I would drive to the sea at dawn and watch the sun coming up and celebrate my relative freedom. On the Thursday morning I was up at 3.00am and off to Fraisthorpe and it’s wonderful sandy beach with all it’s features. It didn’t disappoint as there were lovely clouds in the sky, a crescent moon and wonderful patterns in the sand. Oh how I had missed the sea and all it’s delights!
Amble Beach
Every year I spend a week in a house in Amble, Northumberland. It is a bit south of the usual Northumberland honeypot locations but there is a wonderful pier walk and beach that overlooks the iconic Coquet Island. As Cresswell and Warkworth beaches are 2 of my favourite places for walking and photography Amble is ideally situated.
Blea Tarn Dawn
Whilst in the Lake District last week I set off at 4.30am to capture dawn at Blea Tarn. The plan was to have orange light on the Langdale Pikes with a foreground of peaceful Blea Tarn.
Things didn't quite work out as planned….
Saltwick Bay
If it is January then I must be in Whitby. It is always my first holiday of the year and one that I enjoy very much. It is always quiet down on the front and on the piers and I am only a five minute drive from the delights of Saltwick Bay.
This year I made two trips to the bay. I, along with a few other togs, visited pre-dawn on Sunday morning and then I returned a couple of days later to explore the area around Saltwick Nab. The light on Sunday morning wasn’t particularity promising but fortunately the sunlight shone through the bank of cloud for a few minutes before rising up out of sight.
Pirates Cove, Isle of Arran
A friend at York Photographic Society kindly wrote on my 2nd hand OS map some of the locations and walks not to be missed on my recent visit to the Isle of Arran. As I was travelling with a good friend who wouldn’t want to stand behind me in the cold whilst I took photographs I usually set off early morning with my camera and returned to the house in time for breakfast.
Two Lake District Sunrises
Whilst in the Lake District at the end of August I experienced 2 sunrises which were both beautiful but different. On the last full day I set the alarm for 4.15am in order to give myself time to drive over the Kirkstone Pass to Ullswater and arrive an hour before sunrise.
Australia: At the end of the day
Sunset in Australia was a lot earlier than in the UK so it wasn't difficult to find photographic opportunities at the end of the day although it often clashed with meal time!
Saltwick Bay Sunrise
I got up at 6.30am to get there before first light. As I was putting on my wellies I could see that the sky was starting to turn an amazing deep red and there was still an hour left before sunrise but I didn't want to miss a moment.
#Wexmondays Sunrise at Bamburgh Castle
I recently went to Northumberland for a week for some R&R after my mum died. The plan was to take photographs in some of my favourite locations, find some new beaches, and to walk along them to clear my head.
Peak District - 31 December 2014
One last Hurrah was required to see out 2014. I have really enjoyed my photography this year and I have been relatively successful in my small way in developing my skills and publishing my work for critique and for sale.
