Whilst in Whitby I took the time to explore other areas of the coast. Having watched Joe Cornish's DVD With Landscape in Mind I decided to drive 40 minutes up the coast and see what South Gare had to offer.
This is a spit of land on the south side of the River Tees where it joins the sea. The recently closed steel works is a dominant feature along with the huge Redcar Windfarm. There are sand dunes, a lighthouse and also a small fishing harbour called Paddy's Hole. This contains many relics of boats and overlooks industrial Middlesbrough. Did I mention the many green fishermen's' huts that reside in the shelter of the sand dunes?
Even though it was BITTERLY cold I enjoyed a fascinating couple of hours exploring the many facets and views of the area. It is well worth a visit.....or two.
