I was amazed at how much woodland there was to explore in the area around Nairn and I must have spent as much time investigating inland as I did on the coast. Being 300 miles further north than Yorkshire the Highland autumn was well under way although there was still some summer warmth to be enjoyed. This meant that whilst my eyes were telling me that it was autumn most of the time I was seriously overdressed in my big coat and hat.
Much of the woodland shows up as being coniferous on the OS maps but within these forests are pockets of deciduous trees which make a lovely contrast with their red and yellow autumn colours.
I also visited the Highland version of Yorkshire’s Strid called Randolph’s Leap on the River Findhorn which was quite spectacular with it’s deep gorge where there is a lot of white water rafting.
