Two Waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales

On my recent holiday based in Kettlewell I visited a couple of waterfalls. I have been to Cauldron Force many times at different times of the year but for the first time I went to Aysgill Force which is situated about half a mile up Gayle Beck.

It had been raining at West Burton and so the leaves framing the waterfall were full of colour and there was a lot more water in the falls than I anticipated. The fact that it had recently been raining was an advantage as there were no crowds to maintain a social-distance from or to work around. When I got my photographs back to base I decided that some of them would look good in black and white as there was a lot of water swirling around the rocks and I wanted to emphasise the textures and details rather than the colours.

I also discovered Aysgill Force which is about half a mile upstream from the village of Gayle. It is an easy walk and the falls are well hidden in a small gorge. It isn’t possible to get down to the base of the gorge and there is only a narrow range of views but there are some delightful details to be found with a long lens.

There were also a million midges swarming around and it wasn’t my best idea to turn up wearing shorts. I got eaten alive and was eventually driven away. Nonetheless they are well worth a return visit.
