Those of you who have been hiding under a stone for the past 3 months will know that I have been on an expedition cruise around the west coast of Greenland. I didn’t know fully what to expect when I got on the ship other than all the reviews and comments said that the scenery was spectacular. And it truly was. The variety of the scenery and learning about the lives and history of the Greenlanders never failed to amaze me. It is a country that I strongly recommend you visit.
I am going to post three blogs from Greenland based on three themes:
Glaciers
Settlements
Icebergs
Greenland has the second largest icesheet in the world and in parts is over 1 mile deep and covers 80% of the country making it one of the most uninhabited places on the planet. Much of the ice reaches the coast in the form of enormous glaciers which break up and calve to form icebergs. Whilst many glaciers reach the shore in fjords most of them are to be found in hanging valleys and they loom over the mountains whilst meltwater flows from underneath making patterns and adding texture to the gneiss and granite rock.
